Actually, during the war, there were so many wounded that the medics used amputations for nearly everything. Also, the hospitals were horrible. Most soldiers wited 2-3 days just to be seen. The water they washed the tools and hands in was thick and red with the blood of the wounded and dead. As for bullets, they just stuck their whole hand in and grabbed it. Going to a civil war field hospital was like a decent into hell.
